Initial situation
Headquartered in Frankenthal, Germany, KSB SE & Co. KGaA is one of the world's leading manufacturers of pumps, valves and systems for water and wastewater technology, energy supply and industrial processes. As an international company with numerous locations, KSB is subject to the highest requirements in terms of IT security, compliance and efficient access control.
The previously used Identity & Access Management solution was based on Microsoft Identity Manager (MIM), which was increasingly reaching its functional and technological limits. The management of user accounts, authorizations and processes was partly manual, difficult to scale and no longer met all current compliance requirements.
Objective
The objective of the project was to completely replace the existing MIM environment with the introduction of a modern, cloud-based Identity Governance & Administration (IGA) solution - Omada Identity Cloud. In addition to the technological renewal, the following added value was to be created:
Introduction of self-services for users, ordering and approval of technical identities, such as service accounts and external users.
Automated authorization assignments and checks.
Comprehensive auditing and logging functions to meet compliance requirements
Integration of the leading HR system Workday
Flexible connection of target systems such as Active Directory, EntraID and Exchange Hybrid as well as other systems, whether on-premises or in the cloud.
Implementation
The implementation was carried out by PlanB. GmbH with an interdisciplinary team and team members who had already designed the original MIM solution at KSB. This existing know-how was a key success factor and played a decisive role in the selection of the partner.
Together with the customer, all functional and technical processes were redefined and mapped in a three-tier system landscape (Development, QA, Production). The implementation was carried out using the changeset mechanism available in Omada, which ensures the secure and traceable migration of new functions.
Integration into KSB's hybrid IT environment took place via security-optimized VPN connections, with Omada's REST API being used to supply other third-party systems with identity information.
"With the new IGA solution based on the Omada Identity Cloud, we have taken an important step into the future. In particular, the close cooperation with PlanB. GmbH, who already knew our previous systems well, was a key success factor in the project. The new solution not only takes us to a new technological level, but also noticeably simplifies many day-to-day processes. At the same time, it strengthens our security standards through centralized and transparent authorization management."
Kai Weitzel, IT Projekte Manager at KSB SE & Co. KGaA
Project results
The introduction of the Omada Identity Cloud has not only provided KSB with a future-proof platform for identity and authorization management, but has also opened up new potential:
Reduction of manual efforts through automated processes
Transparency and traceability of access decisions and workflows
Enhanced security through regular recertifications and controlled access
Flexible scalability and expandability for future requirements while simultaneously reducing complexity and infrastructure demands
Compliance with all relevant governance and compliance requirements
In addition, PlanB. supports KSB SE & Co. KGaA in the ongoing operation of the new IGA platform through consulting, error analysis, and continuous development of the solution. This ensures that the IGA environment remains up-to-date at all times and can flexibly respond to new requirements.
